In the spring of 2021, Task Force Hydro1 (TFH1) was founded by Ricky Van Rickley, Leo Yui, and Josh Ruben to address the mental health and well-being of active military personnel, veterans, first responders, and their families. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by this community, the founders, who shared a deep passion for water-based activities, saw an opportunity to leverage surfing, paddle boarding, and outrigger canoeing for emotional healing.

TFH1 was officially established in April 2021 and achieved 501(c)(3) status by August. It quickly became known as the only water sports group dedicated to serving its target community. The organization’s mission was to create a sanctuary and support network through therapeutic water sports, promoting mental well-being and preventing suicide.

Early programs like Stoking Saturdays for surfing and the Outrigger Platoon for canoeing sessions gained rapid popularity, providing participants with a sense of purpose and community. TFH1’s efforts extended beyond activities, focusing on raising awareness about mental health and forming partnerships with mental health organizations to offer comprehensive support.

Today, TFH1 hosts over 50 therapeutic water sports events annually, reaching hundreds of participants. The organization, driven by an all-volunteer workforce, remains committed to community outreach, partnership development, and diversified funding. Through its innovative programs and dedicated support, TFH1 continues to make significant strides in promoting mental health and well-being among those who serve the nation, proving the healing power of water and community.
